My kit arrived! It is fabulous.

I was told to follow the spiders, so that is what I did.

There was a card and silly Poppy apologized for one of my wonderful gifts. She didn't think it was good enough since it was only her second knitted project. I love it though!

I need an owl to delivery a pretty parcel. Penelope's package is all packed up and ready to fly via owl to Wyoming.

I think Penelope will like what she finds when she opens the package, at least I hope she will. I've had fun making things to put in there!

On another note, I believe I'm going to win Nanowrimo again this year! Yay for me!

Last December 1, the day after winning Nanowrimo 2009, I decided to continue writing 500 words a day for an entire year. I have really enjoyed writing my 500 words a day and have not skipped one day, not even when I had to have a couple of minor surgeries. I'm going to have to find a way to celebrate on Dec. 1.

Snickerdoodle Basket Weaving!

Well, I'm happy to report that since the first class of beginner basket weaving filled so fast at the LYS, that they scheduled a new one. My mom and I were both able to get into the class. We went last night, and the class ran over and hour just so everyone could be sure to go home with a completed basket. Jill, our instructor, was real sweet to stay so long and be so patient with all the new weavers.

I learned so much, and my thumbs are still sore from pulling and tucking and weaving all those reeds. I had so much fun though, that I spent hours today researching where to get a good deal on more basket weaving supplies. My research paid off, and I'll be calling and placing my order tomorrow. Oct 30, I'll try to get together with my mother and make another basket.

My plan is to make one or two more of these neat little baskets, and then try my hand at a larger basket to put by a changing table to hold diapers and baby clothes in easy reach. Anyway, that is the plan. I'll see how I do. It took four hours with an instructor at our elbow to make this basket. I'm hoping it doesn't take too much longer than that to make another basket.

My beautiful creation was made with a moss green reed, while my mother used a pretty purple reed. I can't wait to try to make another.

If I had answered this a few days ago I would have said:

2) Medicine--cough meds, stuffy head meds, fever reducer meds, pain meds, throat lozenges

4) Warm blanket for when I was freezing cold, and that I could kick off when fever sweating

Actually I feel as if I have been in hiding for the past week, and those are the items I had with me. I feel like I should get a prize for answering correctly. Ha!

Embroidering my own designs

I've been downloading different software to use to make my own embroidery designs. I finally settled on one. These are the first attempts I made using a photo to embroider and some of my husband's art to embroider. I know there are flaws, but that means I know what I need to learn. And sadly, my thread palette is really small at the moment. I hope to change that slowly over time.

This is a robot my husband drew. There is a slight problem with the mouth. After I stitched this up, I learned how to change the order in which it stitches things, and I'm pretty sure that will help on my next attempt.

This is my dog! She doesn't really have maroon ears of course, but I used that as part of the shadow colors since my thread palette is kind of limited right now.

I really really love my new embroidery/sewing machine! I'm going to make some patches of my parrots to sew on various things as well.

AND IN OTHER NEWS

Go go Gryffindor!!! We won the Quidditch match against Slytherin today. I was the Keeper for Gryffindor, but could not show up on time. I cast a Keeper Charm over the pitch and miraculously no goals were scored even though I was not there. The snitch was found before I arrived. I was a little sad that I missed the game, glad that we won, and happy that my Keeper Charm worked so well!

Arithmancy homework this week was to complete three sudoku puzzles to discover the letters of a word scramble. I love sudoku. The sudoku didn't give me any trouble, but to be honest, Puzzle 2 word scramble did. *hanging head in shame* It was so obvious once I worked it out.

A perfect kit for Dragonsinger

Well I finally sat down and thought out all the finishing touches I want to do for the kit for Dragonsinger. I'm going to go out hopefully on Tuesday and buy the last couple little extras I need. I have an order in for the yarn. It should arrive soon. And I'm spending today and tomorrow finishing up the handmade gift. I think it is going to be cute! At least I hope so.

As far as patterns are concerned. I'm very happy with my choice and I think Dragonsinger will like it as well.

In less than 2 weeks a little owl should be windings its way to Rowan Dragonsinger's house!

No homework. Catching up on crafts

Well since there is no homework this week. I've been trying to catchup on my crafts.

The first thing I finished was the shawl I was making my mom for Mother's day. It came out really pretty. I'm pretty sure I'll do this pattern again. Tunisian crochet was a change of pace and pretty fun. Though not as fast (for me anyway) as regular crochet, it is still faster for me than knitting.

Here is a close up of both front and back sides. This is before blocking.

I do love knitting even though I'm sort of slow at it. I am working on squares for a Lapghan. I have a Piecework magazine that has a Barbara Walker square that I want to try. That meant I needed to finish the last Barbara Walker square I was working on. The square is called Pavilion, and is from the 2nd Treasury of Knitting Patterns. I still have to bind off, but then the square is done and I can move on to the square in my Piecework Magazine.

For my third excursion this week, I was determined to finish a tiny tatted motif which for one reason or another has been daunting me for weeks. Every time I sat down to work on it, I would invariably do something wrong and have to untat, and then my time was up and I'd be off doing something else. I was determined to finish, and finish I did!

I'm working on 25 tatted motifs for the year. I was ahead early on, and slacked off. Now after this daunting little celtic cross from Tatting Collage by Lindsay, I'm behind 2 motifs. Have to hurry hurry. Don't get me wrong, the patterns in Tatting Collage all look easy, it was just the universe conspiring against me for this little piece.

And after finishing my tatted piece, I really wanted to work on some fun crochet. I just received a book called Creating Crochet Fabric, by Dora Ohrenstein. There are some fun looking fabrics in there. A few caught my eye. I think I would like to make some drapes or at least a valance out of some of her fun fabrics. But the piece that I sat down and thought would give me quick crochet satisfaction was a photo she labeled "Traditional Lacework Motifs." I searched the book front to back, and discovered she did not have the pattern. So I decided I would try to work out the pattern on my own. I ran into some troubles on the last round. I kept having to do single crochet around one spot everytime I ran across it. I think I must have covered that area about 3 times with 6sc. Oh well. It is a first attempt and it was late at night. I'll think of something else for the final row next time.

Potions Homework

Originality marker

Part 1:
pictures of 5 different plants, herbs, or flowers that might be used in potions.

1) Dried out Gillyweed. Typically slimy and green, but this has been removed from water for a long time. When eaten, gives a person gills to breathe underwater and gives them webbed hands and feet for swimming.

2) Hackberry tree. This is a very uncommonly used Wand Tree. It has yet to be proven if any wizard or witch has accepted a wand made of the hackberry tree. However, from this photo, you can clearly see the trees are still cut down and harvested to make wands.

3) Pumpkin. Not technically a magical plant, however they are frequently used to decorate for Halloween feasts. Hagrid maintains a pumpkin patch outside his hut, which produces the pumpkins used to decorate the Great Hall for the Hallowe'en feast.

Also a pumpkin patch is a nice place to allow your Hippogriff to lounge.

4) Mallowsweet (otherwise known as African Mallow).

Centaurs have been known to burn this, observing the fumes and flames to refine the results of their stargazing.

5) Powdered form of Hellebore. It is used for invisibility.

Birthday!

Well it is my birthday today! So far all is going as planned. I slept in (possibly the most important plan on my list!) The rest of the day I plan on crocheting and gardening. I really want to work more on the shawl I'm making. And I really want to work in my garden. My parents brought me a picnic table and two benches last night. I need to find a pretty place to put them.

I was out at the Natural Gardener earlier this week. I bought probably too many plants and now I need to finish putting them in the ground. I already planted one thai basil, a pumpkin, 2 butternut squash, 2 acorn squash and 2 okra that I bought there. I have bean seeds planted now around my corn as well.

Today I want to add more soil to 6 other okra that are growing and to a couple of peppers that I have growing in a container. I also need to turn up some soil and get 9 more tomatoes in the ground. I will have a ring of 6 tomatoes and then another ring with 3 cucumber and 3 tomatoes. I would also like to buy a nice trellis and plant an apple gourd near it. Once I know where I'll put that I'll probably plant my watermelon and asian melon nearby. That will take care of the veggies that I bought.

I also have more basil to plant, some mint, marigolds and moss rosses, an autumn fern and many many other things. See, I did buy too many plants haha!

Ok off to get my fingers dirty!

Well I was eliminated this week. I was just not fast enough. I have managed to finish the sole and top of both booties. I'm now doing the top rim and tongue. I will try to get a photo up tomorrow if possible.

I hope I can knit and crochet a little faster tomorrow for the Quidditch match against the Hufflepuffs. I'll be playing Keeper. The match starts at 11am. I have so many errands to run before the match. Hope I can finish them all.

The good news for the day (since I the bad was that I lost my duel), I got my new glasses and the Trooper was finally repaired! Yay I have mobility again. The glasses have to go back to the shop because the right eye is still blurry. I guess the lab got the prescription wrong. The Trooper is going in the morning to finally get inspected. We drove it last night about 65 miles so it would run all the computerized tests. It should pass this time. Yay!

Alright off to get ready for bed, it is very late and I need to be well rested for Quidditch tomorrow!

Well it was a crazy dueling day! I managed to win my round of the crochet duels! Yay I get to crochet duel next weekend too.

Dragonsinger and Loverofallemo finished before me. They were paired up against each other. Last term Loverofallemo shuntbumped me out of the competition. I'm hoping I don't get paired to Dragonsinger next weekend!

HSKS 10 Begins!

I'm excited for this session at Hogwarts. I want to try out for Chaser on the Quidditch team. I only hope I'm good enough.

for my first assignment, I would like to state why I picked the three characters I picked.

1) Sirius Black. He is my favorite HP character of all. Everyone seems to be against him, but he keeps going and not even dementors and Azkaban can hold him. Of course it helps that he is an animagus and that I really love animals. Who can resist a big fluffy dog?! Not me, that is for certain.

2) Remus Lupin. What can I say? Another misunderstood character. Not all werewolves are bad, and Remus Lupin really has a big heart imo. He turns down what is good for him because he doesn't feel he is good enough. And again, even though werewolves are typically not nice cuddly pets, I find it hard to resist any type of canine!

3) Nymphadora Tonks. Her character seems so full of life. She is careful and smart, but to me she always seemed to have more energy than any of the others in the Order. I felt bad for her when she was rejected by Remus Lupin, and then I felt gratified that he finally married her.

All three of these characters were killed, and I didn't feel it was right or necessary. Surely they could have survived somehow!

Visit to the Owlery

Well I managed to visit the owlery today. I picked out a very sturdy looking little owl who I'm sure can fly like the wind.

I almost forgot to put in a small extra handmade item, but luckily I remembered just before taping the package shut. Whew!!

I love my kit. As you can see from the photo, I received lots and lots of goodies. There was actually a 2nd spool of crochet thread but it was busy with my tatting things and I neglected to round it up and put it in the photo.

So what did I get? A beautiful bag made by Cleo! A Harry Potter snitch wash cloth. Some beautiful red yarn to go along with a nice pattern for socks. I also received dpns and circular needles to get the job done. I received beautiful blue linen blend yarn, and two crochet threads (the missing one is Christmas tree green, or at least I say it is because I'm tatting a Christmas tree with it). Berty Botts Every Flavor Beans YUM!! A gorgeous row counter bracelet that I can't wait to use! And Cleo made me two sets of stitch markers. I also received some decorative paper clips that will be very useful. A two year calendar planner. A postcard and note from none other than Cleo herself. Cleo said if I don't want the bag I can send it back because she loves it. But I love it!! So I'm not sending it back.

New goodies!

Its been a crazy week this past week. Actually all month has been pretty nutz. I thought I deserved to be spoiled a little, so I went ahead and did the honors.

For my tatting pleasure, I bought some new picot gauges and a new shuttle that is shaped like a fish. I bought them from Georgia Seitz. I like them. The fish took a little getting used to and since it is so large I really cannot tat with it quickly.

I did this small bookmark to test out my new supplies. Actually I say small bookmark, but this is the second time I have made this and this one is longer. If you look close on one end you can see that I used a pull thread to hide my ends. Didn't do such a great job. Maybe if I rinse it and then use my fingers to reshape it, the piece will look better.

And because what girl really has enough hobbies? So I went out and bought a drop spindle! I'm so excited. I got the Hi-Lo spindle by Schacht. My first attempt was not so good. My second attempt was a little better. Then I found a video showing how to park and draft. This worked a little better. The left is a piece from my first hour of attempting to spin. As you can see there is some on the spool from my park and draft attempt and I really like how it is coming out. On the right is some roving I bought for when I can get a little more consistent.

And for those keep tabs on me. I'm caught up with my nano-wrimo novel. I am at 48.5k now and counting! I expect to win by the end of the day.

Fly Free Mimsy budgie

Well a couple of days ago I lost one of my little budgies. She was only about 4.5 years old. The vet believes it was either liver or respiratory disease. She hid her illness well. I had no idea. We ended up spending quite a bit at the vet office on her, but to no avail. I probably would have let her slip quietly away had I believed she was deathly ill. I thought she had broken a blood feather. She was having a serious moult. I had never seen her growing so many feathers in at once. I thought she was weakened from the blood loss because such a small bird doesn't have much blood to begin with. The illness overtook her and she left us around 10:30pm on Thursday the 12th.

I miss her. I have one other female budgie and she looks very depressed. I have two male budgies and they are singing and causing a raucous as is typical for them. I think in a day or two they will have once again lifted Myrtle's spirits and hopefully she will move on and not mourn her little companion of 4.5 years for too long. Mimsy and Myrtle used to always be found without a doubt side by side on a perch. It is sad seeing Myrtle sitting alone as the boys are too busy to settle down and just perch with her.

Well I have been taking a class in tatting. Two weeks ago the class ended. I would like to share a few photos of some of my accomplishments. I began tatting back in August and took a class this past month. These photos are not necessarily in order of date completed.

I just bought a nice 5x7 binder with acid free sleeves to put these pieces in. The only problem I have with it is the top is open and the pieces could fall out. I plan on trying to put them in order with dates finished, but so far they are in there randomly by pretty colors.

Self Closing Mock Rings were my bane in the tatting class. The right is my first attempt. The left is my attempt just this past week after our kind instructor, Cynthia, stayed an hour after class to help a few of us with this technique.

Halloween lameness

Shuntbumping & Spoiling

Yesterdays Shuntbumping went...well and not so well, depending on how you look at it. I won, yay, so that was the well part. I made toddler mitts that fit my hands, that is the not so well part. They do keep my wrists warm. My husband had the AC and fan running full blast yesterday and they warmed up my hands a little. I guess I'll throw them in the glove box for future driving purposes.

In another project bag, I have a gift for my spoilee!! I selected what to make over a week ago but just purchased the yarn a few days ago. I began the first stitches of her ____________, and really like the way it is turning out so far. I would post photos but I probably shouldn't since my spoilee will peek!

I also have narrowed down what to put in my spoilee's kit. I have a much better idea of what goes into the magic box!

Lemonblondie loves blue! Right now sitting here, I really like blue. My color preferences drift between a few colors, but right now they are inline with Lemonblondie. An OWL Flew in Through the Window!

Yay My Owl Arrived! And he looked tired carrying the weight of this box all the way from Canada!! Thank you Megaera Black aka Chelle & Faye!

I was so excited! I just had a feeling my box would arrive today. And I was right! And the Owl came at a perfect time, I just got back home from an appointment and in flew the burdened Owl! Below is a photo of all the goodies.
And here is a close up of the beautiful hand painted yarn! The yarn is by Dream in Color, and I love the colors.
And I was lucky enough not to get one bag, but two bags! How cute is that. And Megaera just knows how much I love birds too!
Here is the pretty decorated binder with the pattern carefuly preserved inside. Sorry the flash on this darn muggle camera made a glare right in the middle of the photo.
And look at the cute Baby Dragon Amigurumi I will soon be making. It is soo adorable!
And of course there were Bertie Botts Beans which I opened and started munching before I even finished unpacking the rest of the box. The bright glare is a glow in the dark froggie cross stitch, very cute. I got a Hogwarts journal for all my crafting notes! There was some yummy mint chocolate lip balm (the tin has an owl on it!) and as if that was not enough a $15 itunes gift card. And of course beans to fill my Baby Dragon...you know how hungry baby dragons get! Just ask Hagrid! Oh and I forgot to put it in the photo but there is a very cute card that came with the package of a Hogwart's student complete with owl on her shoulder!

Megaera if I was anywhere near Canada I would run and give you a big bear hug! I love this package, you spoiled me!

I received this wonderful WWW at a time when I really needed it. Ending my Summer Camp with minor surgery (I'm a big baby though and any surgery makes me NERVOUS!!), and one sick dog after another, well I needed a laugh...and then my WWW arrived!

I'm only sorry that I did not scan and take these photos sooner, Quietus Snape.
Here is the wonderful card that I got. I've always wanted to see the Northern Lights and I love looking at photos of them.

I've been watching videos on the dying process. Looks pretty interesting. Sort of getting the bug to try it out. Saw one video using Tumeric to dye things yellow and onion skins to give a reddish brown to silk and a beige (?) to cotton. So many things in the kitchen to try this out with.

I wonder if beets would give a really pretty red or if it would be more pink.

I'm going to the craft store today. I have a 50% coupon to spend at Michael's and one at JoAnns. I wish their yarn wasn't all synthetic. If I can't find any notions or other cute item, then I'll have to select some kind of yarn. They do have the fisherman's yarn, and I think it would felt just fine. I guess if I can find nothing else, I'll get a skein of that and make I dunno what!

We are part way through the week. I'm no longer sure what kind of egg I'm hunting for. I think some eggs are the dragon variety...very pretty, golden eggs. I have not found any of those yet. Anytime I've found an egg it blasts off in an entirely frightful manner. How did I end up in a nest of blast ended skroots?

In the second volume of the HP books by JK Rowling, The (#1)Chrome Cab Festers {Chamber of Secrets}, we continue to learn the incredible adventures of Hogwarts student (#2) Parry He Trot {Harry Potter} and his friends (#3) Oral Weensy {Ron Weasley} and (#4)Angering Her More {Hermione Granger}. Belonging to the house of (#5) Dry Off Grin {Gryffindor}, they attend Defense Against the (#6) Ark Darts {Dark Arts} taught by Wizarding celebrity (#7) Oracle Dorky Light {Gilderoy Lockhart}, a none-too-bright fellow who cannot even handle pixies!

In The (#8) Chrome Cab Festers {Chamber of Secrets}, we also meet Dobby a (#9)See Flu Oh {House Elf} for the first time. Determined Dobby seeks to sabotage the return of (#10) Parry He Trot {Harry Potter} to Hogwarts and is pretty persistent but is unsuccessful. After a few weeks at school, the deceased Ravenclaw student who haunts the girls lavatory, also known as (#11) My Molten Grain {Moaning Myrtle}, shows (#12) Parry He Trot {Harry Potter} and (#13) Oral Weensy {Ron Weasley} an old empty diary that dropped through her ghostly form out of thin air!

Week two at camp

What a week this has been. Did I even sleep at all? I don't think so. Since tomorrow is Saturday I solemnly swear to turn off all muggle alarms, cast a do not disturb hex around my bed and sleep until I'm no longer tired. If that means I sleep 13 hours, then so be it!

Then the rest of Saturday (if there is any time spent not sleeping), I will spend time finishing knitting some hand towels for my muggle father's birthday.

There are some fantastic patterns in both my spoiler's and spoilee's projects.

My spoiler, Megaera Black, RavID nosheep4chelle, has some really great items to show off. Her socks make me really want to hurry and learn how to make some for myself! She is a fan of house hippos! I just love those cute little darlings. She also is home to several adorable owls. Of course, her paw washcloth is going on my list of to-do items. I know the perfect recipient for just such a paw.

My spoilee, Quietous, RavID SeverusSnape, has some really inspiring projects going on. I MUST have a season 12 Dr. Who scarf. How have I made is so far in life without the perfect item to finish off my wardrobe? I'm also going to have to keep tabs on her projects to see how her Sharaz Jek mask goes. And if you have not looked at her projects, you should check them out if only to see her cute dog sweater model!

Favorite Summer Camp Activity

Wow the days have been packed full of fun entertainment. But so far the best has to be when we went down to the bottom of the lake to visit the merpeople. They were not at all happy to see us until we knitted them head wraps and leg warmers out of gillyweed!

Well I made it into Phoenix Cabin. There are some great campers here with me.

I can't wait to find out who my spoilee is. I guess I'll have to sit here and knit until I get the information!

Here I am at Diagon Alley. I just picked up the last things I think I'll need. I picked up an extra book on "Herbology and the Care of Magical Creatures." Now if Bobble gets sick while we're at camp I might know what to gather to cure him.
